BKSP (Savar)-- (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the government launched an extensive drive for searching and nursing sport talents up to grassroots level for rearing sportsmen from allover the country. “We have taken projects to turn the population into human resources by providing training and grooming up sportsmen of international standards,” she said about the nationwide programme undertaken following the country’s stunning debut in world cricket. Inaugurating Shooting Complex and Audio-Visual Centre of BKSP here last (Saturday) morning, the Prime Minister called upon trainees of this institution to utilise all the facilities for training and come out as skilled athletes to earn laurels for the country. “We have extended the facilities for sports up to remote places of the country through utilisation of science of sports and extension of training,” she told the function. Sports sector attained the highest achievement during the time of the present government following pragmatic and proper programmes for sports development. The modern shooting complexes will be an added attraction of Bangladesh Krira Shikkhha Pratistan (BKSP) built at a cost of Tk 8.64 crore. The audiovisual centre is built at a cost of Tk 1.40 crore in the beautiful complex of BKSP in the midst of a pastoral landscape. The Prime Minister first went to the shooting complex and finally came to the audiovisual centre to address the trainees of BKSP. She also visited the swimming pool, gymnasium, modern indoor cricket centre, sports science department and other centres of the biggest institution of sports learning. She said the government created awareness of the people for sports through adoption of a timely National Sports Policy. “We have constructed 10 swimming pools and 21 stadiums, including the 4th national stadium in Dhaka, and in four divisions and 17 districts.” She said Physical Education College had been established in Mymensingh and first phase of construction of a cricket stadium of international standards at Narayanganj completed. “We have established infrastructure for sports from village to the city, we are constructing more new stadiums, swimming polls, playgrounds in the country.” The government is increasing facilities for sporting and reconstructing the old playgrounds and extending facilities for sports training. Children of the remote areas are enjoying all the facilities of sports. As a result, the next generations are getting scope for moulding themselves as healthy, innovative and disciplined human resources. She said the government had taken steps for finding out promising players and training them up under the talent-searching programme for the development of games and sports. Further listing out sports-promotion steps the Prime Minister said the government made inter-school and inter-college sports competition compulsory, and hoped that through this effort skilled players would emerge in future. “We have allocated Tk 28.72 crore in revenue budget and Tk 137 crore in development budget this year for sports sector.” The Prime Minister told the function that during the tenure of Awami League government Bangladesh earned fame in the world due to success in different games. “We won ACC trophy and our cricket team became unbeaten champion of ICC trophy. We successfully organised the Mini World Cup Cricket Tournament after tackling the devastating floods of 1998.” she said. The present generation, who have not seen the victory of 1971, saw the euphoric moment of victory when the country’s cricketers defeated mighty Pakistan in the World Cup. The cricketers of the Golden Bengal of Bangabandhu elevated Bangladesh to the global elite club as 10th test-playing nation. Bangladesh won the SAF Football Gold Medal and earned 36 medals, including 21 gold, in the Special Olympic World Games of the disabled held in 1999 in North Carolina, USA. About the BKSP, she said the government made it as the nucleus of competitive development of standard of sports and centre of sports training. She hoped that shooters would be able to earn more international success and fame through training in the shooting complex established here yesterday. “I am happy to know that BKSP is going to start higher education in sports. It will help expand scientific practice of games and sports. This will open up new horizon in sports education.” Following government’s efforts the dimension of the BKSP increased manifold, she said, adding number of students increased, new halls were built and degree class opened for long-course training. The government has started development of infrastructure of Dinajpur Regional Training Centre while work on Chittagong Regional Centre will be started soon. Moreover, she said, “our government is going to establish training centres in all the divisions in phases.” A good athlete is appreciated worldwide, she reminded the learners, adding: “We have been working with firm commitment for enhancing the honor and familiarity of our country through building competitive, skilled and successful athletes.” State Minister for Sports Obaidul Qader also addressed the function while Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad, CHT Affairs Minister Kalpa Ranjan Chakma, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury, diplomats and Director General of BKSP Brig Gen Ahsan Habib were present. |
